Distributed Temperature Sensing systems (DTS) are optoelectronic devices which measure temperatures by means of optical fibers functioning as linear sensors. DTS is a technology which provides the user with a technique to measure the temperature distribution along a fiber optic line at any time and to repeat such measurements as required. Temperatures are recorded along the optical sensor cable, thus not at points, but as a continuous profile. A high accuracy of temperature determination is achieved over great distances.

It was originally developed by the oil and gas industries as a borehole logging tool. Other applications include pipeline monitoring and fire detection and protection. Also Fiber Optic Monitoring is an excellent solution to the increased stress on power cables in a world with high energy demand. Accurate monitoring provides the knowledge of when a cable is close to reaching its physical limits. Implementing such a monitoring solution prevents damage to the cable. However, if any damage occurs, you know exactly when to do the maintenance and precisely where on the cable because you have the exact location of the temperature increase.
