Although the majority of power is currently supplied through fossil fuel powered sources, the ever growing demand will ultimately and inevitably result in such sources to make way for renewable sources of energy. The ever growing demand for cleaner energy and the new developments achieved within the renewable technologies has intensified the penetration of such newly developed technologies within the power sector. Such increase in utilization and penetration of renewable sources will not be without drawbacks which can manifest in many ways. One of the drawbacks which is entailed by the increased penetration of renewable sources will be in respect to power quality consideration such as harmonic and flickering issues which has rendered the need for methods to improve the quality of power ever more critical.
In order to address power quality issues, extensive research has been dedicated in improving the performance of devices used for power quality enhancement and reactive compensation. One of the trending areas of research concerns the use of Magnetically Controlled Shunt Reactors or MCSR [1]. This report intends to review the technology used within the Magnetically Controlled Shunt Reactors (MCSR) and review the applications and capabilities that ensue with the use of such devices.
